| I remember Sister Grace Mercedes very well. I started school at Good Counsel grammar school in 1940 and graduated from the high school in 1950. Most of the nuns taught me one thing or another. They wore habits then and took a vow of poverty. But they were still darned good teachers and many of them had graduate degrees. |

hi -- my name is Kim... I'm writing a memoir of sorts and was just writing about S. Alma Delores. Don't remember Sr. St. Winifed. Do you remember Sr. Grace Mercedes? |
hi - my name is henry urna and I am a graduate of both OLGC grammar (1953) and high schools (1957). Sr Alma was my 3rd grade teacher and Sr Grace was my 5th grade teacher. Sr. Grace also was in charge of the altar boys and taught me the Latin responses that qualified me to serve mass. Both were wonderful teachers. I recall Sr. St. Winifred's name but am not quite sure what if anything she taught me

Tom,
My name is Henry Urna and I went to OLGC at the same time as your mother Eileen and I believe your uncle? Gene. I think that I was a year or two behind them. We all spent a lot of time at Bernie's on the corner across from the church and I also spent a lot of time in the summer in Belmar. I also believe that your uncle was in the bugle and drum corps with me as well. |

Tom,
Great to hear from you. Both Bernies and the Drum Corps were a large part of all of our lives back then. We started out simply marching in parades sponsored by the church and then when the church could no longer support us, our families got together and formed the Woodsiders. We had some wnderful times travelling to competitions. We used to go up against Blessed Sacrament, St. Josephs, and the other corps that were almost all sponsored by the area Catholic churches. We would lose of course, but it was great fun. I guess the only one left is the corps from Garfield known as the Garfield Cadets. I see them sometimes on TV. Boy has the Drum Corps business changed!!!
As for Bernies, what can I say? That is where we all spent an awfully lot of time just standing on the corner and acting foolish. There was nothing like Belmar in the summer and we all would flock down there every Friday night like lmmings. I know during my senior year I worked all week in a paint brush factory to get the money to spend on the weekend.
Looking back and seeing how things have changed, I really wish today's kids could have had some of the same experiences we had.
My best to your Mom and Uncle Gene.
Regards
Henry Urna |

There's going to be a reunion in May. It will be in Spring Lake this year. The old stand by the lake in Belmar is going to be leveled to make way for condos. Expensive condos, of course. But I'll be there and happy to say hello to anybody you can think of. One of you is related to Franny Nulty Mahon. I'm sure she'll be there. _________________ William McTernan |

Tom
Not sure what happened, but I think that I was in the middle of saying that I was thankful for the wonderful education that I received from OLGC.

Tom,
Guess I must have messed up a rather long diatribe detailing some information to your mother regarding what I had been doing all these years. I will send you a private message that details a lot of that stuff since everyone here isn't particularly interested in the story of my life. For now just give your mother my regards and tell her I hope she is well and enjoying life.

William,
Saw your message but do not believe I know you. I went to both OLGC grammar and high schools from 1946 - 1957. This year's reunion would be my 50th and I probably won't be able to attend due to my wife's medical situation. Would appreciate it if you run into anyone from the HS Class of 1957 and could say "Hi" for me.
Thanks
Henry Urna |
