Good morning Patty Ann, you can find one on e-bay...and there are places but right now I cant find the paper that my boss had for me with the names of places where I could find one.As for safety, I had ALL of my kids in one and never ever did I have a problem! I baby sat in my home for years so I could be home for my own kids and every baby at one point or the other was in a play pen! I dont know what I would have done without one! A play pen helps big time for your sanity when its a Calgon moment and you need a break...or just s nice place for the baby to stretch out in and take a nap even.
Having that many grandkids is great! A little hard on the purse when the birthdays roll in or Christmas...mainly due to ALL the birthdays in Dec...but we are enjoying the kids and vice-versa. But even if you only have one grandchild...that one child will be the love of your life and you can do all sorts of things with her.Naturally having 7 children, you can expect a slew of grandkids, but when I had as many kids as I did, I always said..."there is always room for one more" and there always was...maybe a tight squeeze but room nonetheless!
Anyway...have clothes in the washer...have to email one of my kids that I took care of at the day care center. She is 8, almost 9 years old , I walked her to school every morning , her last day of School was Thursday and she brought me a note from her mom with her email address and an invite to come visit any time I would like and to bring my grandson Eric. Nice eh? I will take her up on that one! One of the many perks of doing what I do!
Of course you worked with kids, which is why you and I were drawn to each other! When you have something in common , like children, its nice to know that someone else feels about them the way you do!
Well...the wash awaits so I must go.
Have a good day!
Mary Ellen

Pat,
That last name sounds familiar.I seem to remember a boy about my age and I think his first name started with an L.Sadly,I don't have an OLGC yearbook to reference and that's all the old brain will spit out.

Mary Ellen...we lived in a wood house , but we "sat on the stoop" or on the steps, we had no porch....I slept in the attic area as a teen, and I would have slept on the stoop if my folks let me it was so darn hot up there...can't imagine life without air now.
One of my fondest memories is the ice cream man coming around praying he would stop and lining up with the kids for an ice cream bar or a push up pop!
I even remember the "rag man" in his cart and the knife sharpener guy...also the egg man who used to deliver, and of course, the milk man...and fighting over who got to skim the cream off the top...that was sooo delicious!

So much for memory lane...have to pay some bills and walk the dog! Have a good night! Patty Ann

We had a "stoop" as did all our neightbors on Pomona Avenue between Bergen and Parkview Terrace. I can only recall about 3 real porches.
But as kids we played stoop baseball, ball slammed against the stairs as hard as an 8-9 year old could from less than a yard away ands the other 8-9 year old was the fielder. If you could get away with it, you could use a 'spaldeen" pink ball and really get distance at times.

MAL....my heart just skipped a beat....that was our favorite ball when we were kids! A high bouncer and we lost a zillion of them to the mean lady Miss Sexton, would keep them if they landed in her back yard! I bounced them off of many a wall and played games like bouncing and do all sorts of things from number 1 to ten. That is if you could last that long with out making a mistake. Or bouncing the ball off a wall then it would come back to you but before it got back to you...you would clap your hands in front and in back and the catch the ball, if you were lucky! You would throw the ball under your leg , turn around and all sorts of neat things! Today the kds would be bored to death but in our day...it was so much fun! THANK YOU for reminding me of the Spaldeen Pink Bouncing Ball and all the fun I had !

Jim,

I used to work with Mickey (Michelina) Patella (1960-70). She used to drive a great looking T-Bird. Her brothers were Matty, Lou, Joey and Pat. I believe it was Lou that was on the Newark Police force and retired as a Lt. When they were kids their parents owned a produce store on 7th Avenue in the first ward.

Hi MaryEllen: I know I shouldn't put this out there for everyone to read, but what the heck, it is the truth. My son makes fun of the way I say I am going to do the WARSH, instead of WASH, whether I got that from Newark or being stupid, I can not change no matter how I try, so I just gave up and he corrects me everytime and I just laugh. Take care. Judie

Judie.
When I was a Newarker about 56 years ago, there was a very common saying."If it were not for the high school graduates, there'd be no one to hire the college graduates." My Dad, a college graduate, was fond of another depression era statement, "The cheapest thing you can hire is a brain."
Next time you college graduate "corrects" you, you might want to advise him of the "real" facts of life in the big city. Razz

Hi Mal: I always do, I was a single parent and he appreciates everything I did for him, that's the only word "warsh" that I say incorrectly and I don't know why, oh well whatever. Take care. Judie
