| In the 60's Halloween was still a big thing. At the ages of 11,12 & 13 we still dressed in costume and went trick or treating. For the girls the costumes of choice were gypsies, hippies and beatniks. For the guys it was hobos, hippies and rock "n" rollers. These were all homemade. We would do our trick or treating at the businesses along Frelinghuysen Avenue in Newark and continue into Elizabeth along Newark Avenue(same street, different name). Dairy Queen would give a 10 cent cone. Most stores would give good sized candy bars. I don't believe the snack size of today was invented yet. We also hit all the single family homes thinking we would get better stuff than we would in the projects. Not necessarily true. The change you got in those days could amount to $3 or $4. Certainly enough to go to the Mayfair Theatre in Hillside or to Twin City Skating. Nugents' Tavern was another good place to hit for good bounty. Some of the other places were the A&P, the Shack(anyone remember it?), the drug store(in Elizabeth), don't remember the name and Burry Biscuits. Those were fun days!! |
