John Robert Garrity, 84, of Holiday City West, Berkeley Twsp died Saturday Aug. 8, 2009 at Van Dyke Hospice Center, Toms River. Born and raised in Newark, he lived in the Vailsburg section of Newark before moving to Berkeley Twsp 12 years ago. John worked in sales for Heraeus-Amersil, Sayreville, NJ for twenty five years before retiring in 1988. Mr. Garrity was a US Navy WWII Veteran, serving in the 112th Construction Battalion (Seabees) in the Asiatic Pacific. He was a member of the American Legion Vailsburg Post 395 for 61 years. John held many leadership positions in the Legion throughout those years. He truly enjoyed the Post's sponsorship of the Vailsburg American Legion baseball team. John was a member of the Navy Seabee Veterans of America and the VFW Silver Holiday Post 10185. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 4066, Maplewood, NJ. John was a parishioner of St. Maximilian Kolbe RC Church, Berkeley Twsp and was a former member of Sacred Heart RC Church, Vailsburg. He was a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Maximilian Kolbe.
Surviving are his wife of sixty-one years, Teresa (Peragallo); son, Thomas Garrity of Newark; daughter and son in law, Donna and Robin Wahl of Readington Township; and sister, Jane Boud of Barnegat. John enjoyed spending time with his many nieces and nephews and their families.
The family will receive friends Tuesday 2-4 & 7-9pm at the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, 145 St. Catherine Blvd., Toms River. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Wednesday 11:30am at St. Maximilian Kolbe RC Church, Berkeley Twsp. Burial to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Toms River. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Van Dyke Hospice, 99 Rte 37W ,Toms River, NJ 08755 or Holiday City First Aid Squad, 100 Port Royal Dr., Toms River, NJ 08757.
